Tearne
Nel corpo delle cittą
A cura di Rosy Colombo, Tom Freshwater, Simonetta Lux
Inaugurazione 2 luglio 2004 ore 18:00
Attualmente vive e lavora a Oxford. Dopo
esposto regolarmente presso la Royal Academy of Arts. Ha realizzato
mostre personali e collettive in molti musei e istituzioni espositive
nuove tecnologie anche multimediali all'arte contemporanea", nonch
- direttrice Maria Grazia Picozzi.

Roma
Tearne
Nel corpo delle cittą
Curated by Rosy Colombo, Tom Freshwater, Simonetta Lux
Opening: July 2, 2004 at 6 p.m.
The exhibition of the works of artist and writer Roma Tearne opens on
July 2, 2004 at the MLAC (University of Rome “La Sapienza”).
Of Sri Lankan origin, Roma Tearne has lived in the United Kingdom since
1964, now living and working in Oxford. Following her studies at London’s
Goldsmiths College, her works have frequently been exhibited by the
Royal Academy of Arts, while numerous museums and institutions worldwide
have displayed her works in group and solo exhibitions. Tearne’s
work is characterised by her merging of realistic elements with illusion
and intuition, fragmented memories and spatial perception. Her installations
combine almost every form of artistic media and technology: from painting,
sculpture and video-installations to straightforward linguistic and
conceptual appropriation.
The work of Roma Tearne is centred around emotion and perception: her
installations, therefore, re- appropriate objects, whether they be design
pieces, photographs or video images, according to their communicative
and emotional value. The present installation, conceived specifically
for the Rome exhibition, is certainly not a realistic vision of the
city but rather the artist’s personal, visionary perception. A
number of evocative works will be displayed in the MLAC gallery, acting
as the prologue to a group of blindfolded figures. Some of these statues
come from the Museum of Classical Art of “La Sapienza” University.
Similarly, all the busts of Roman Emperors at the Capitoline Museum
will be blindfolded, as will the statue of Giordano Bruno in Campo de’
Fiori, the latter with a striking red cloth. This blindfolding creates
a powerful message: in the absence of their gaze, the internal reflection
of the figures is conjured up. And thus the artist highlights the intellectual
and substantially abstract, ideal vision – in both its positive
and negative aspects – of history’s leading figures: the
force of Tearne’s act clearly adds drama to the message but also
represents the intellectual objectivity of the artist in her desire
to outline the meaning of the project, through the exercise of power
first by the emperors and later, more implicitly, by the Church of Rome.
The installation is located in the MLAC (University of Rome “La
Sapienza”) with video images from Campo de’ Fiori and the
Capitoline Museum (statue of Giordano Bruno and busts of the Roman Emperors,
respectively). A film by the artist is also part of the action, together
with a volume – “Nel corpo delle città”, edited
by Rosy Colombo and Domenico Scudero and published by Gangemi –
including a fictional autobiography by Roma Tearne.
The exhibition is curated by Tom Freshwater and Simonetta Lux together
with Rosy Colombo, co-ordinator of the English Literature doctoral programme
for the University of Rome “La Sapienza”, department of
English and Anglo-American studies. It is inspired by the artist’s
work in Oxford’s Ashmolean Museum and is part of the MLAC’s
Regione Lazio-sponsored research programme in “The application
of new technology to contemporary art”. The event is also sponsored
by the Arts Council of Great Britain.
The organisers also wish to thank the following institutions and individuals
for their cooperation and participation: the superintendancy for archeological
heritage of the council of Rome; superintendant Eugenio La Rocca, Clara
Cancellieri and Luisa Cardilli; Maria Grazia Picozzi, head of the Museum
of Classical Art of “La Sapienza” University; Marina Mattei
, responsible for the Capitoline Museum.
