Trilogia d’artista. Il cinema di Mario Schifano

Al termine del convegno verrà inaugurata la mostra Trilogia d’artista a cura di Giorgia Calò. La video-installazione, che avrà luogo presso il MLAC fino al 28 maggio 2004, prevede la proiezione simultanea dei lavori cinematografici pi rappresentativi di Mario Schifano: Satellite (1968, col. e b/n, 35mm, 82′); Umano non umano (1969, Eastman color, 16mm e 35mm, 95′); Trapianto, consunzione e morte di Franco Brocani (1969, Eastamn color e b/n, 16mm e 35mm, 120′).
Il convegno e la video-installazione mirano a tracciare un percorso espositivo che intende suggerire letture e interpretazioni diverse, un’occasione per riflettere criticamente sul significato di “film d’artista” attraverso l’operato cinematografico di Mario Schifano, e supportato da testimonianze che riguardano sia riflessioni critiche, sia collaborazioni e relazioni dirette avute con l’artista.

Negli anni Sessanta Mario Schifano sostituisce ai pennelli la macchina da presa, mezzo con il quale raggiunge la sua massima soddisfazione. Le immagini riprodotte dagli apparecchi tecnologici, private di ogni orpello e rilevate nella loro essenzialità, sono preferite dall’artista per la velocità di percezione. La macchina da presa, usata dal 1964, permette a Schifano di afferrare tutto in un attimo, continuando a procedere, così come in pittura, sempre per frammenti, e di realizzare quelle ricerche artistiche sul dinamismo che lo interessano da alcuni anni. Di qui la scelta di fare film. L’approccio con il cinema  stato di tipo passionale, caratterizzato da una certa ossessione per l’inquadratura, spesso traballante e quasi mai in asse, e per la realizzazione di lunghe sequenze ricche di immagini, soventemente giustapposte e ripetute.
Dopo i primi cortometraggi Schifano realizza nel 1967 Anna Carini in agosto vista dalle farfalle. L’anno seguente comincia le riprese di Satellite che insieme a Umano non umano e Trapianto, consunzione e morte di Franco Brocani, daranno vita alla trilogia. I film di Schifano non sono narrativi, mostrano delle immagini ma non raccontano una storia, sono fuori dai canoni cinematografici, pertanto collocabili nel così detto “cinema d’artista”.

In occasione della video-installazione e del convegno verrà presentato, per il ciclo “Letture Attive”, il libro Trilogia d’artista. Il cinema di Mario Schifano di Giorgia Calò, pubblicato da Lithos editrice per la collana artisticaMENTE – saggi documenti interviste – diretta da Simonetta Lux.

Come simbolo della produzione filmica di Mario Schifano, intesa come visione del rapporto tra due mezzi espressivi quali cinema e arte, in mostra sarà esposto il Proiettore cinematografico della fine degli anni Settanta, dipinto dall’artista a smalto e acrilico.
In memoria dell’happening di Mario Schifano I sogni e le stelle tenutosi al Piper di Roma nel 1967, i brani del complesso musicale Delle Stelle accompagneranno il pubblico nel percorso espositivo.

Il convegno, la video-installazione e il libro sono stati realizzati con il contributo della Fondazione Schifano e della Regione Lazio per la ricerca “Applicazione nuove tecnologie multimediali all’arte contemporanea” , nell’ambito dei relativi corsi sperimentali di stage/Master in Cura Critica ed Installazione Mussale, voluti dal direttore del Museo Simonetta Lux e realizzati dal curatore del MLAC Domenico Scudero.

TRILOGY OF AN ARTIST

MARIO SHIFANO’S CINEMA

On May 11, 2004 at the MLAC, the Museum Laboratory of Contemporary Art at “La Sapienza” University in Rome, there will be a meeting titled Trilogia d’artista. Il cinema di Mario Schifano. Pierfilippo Capello, Miriam Gagnor, Adriano Apr, Enrico Ghezzi, Ettore Rosboch, Franco Brocani, Nancy Ruspoli will take part in the meeting.
At the end of the meeting will be inaugurated the Trilogia d’artista exhibition curated by Giorgia Calò. The video-installation, that will be showed at the MLAC untill may 28, 2004, scheduls the simultaneous projection of the more representative cinematographic work of Mario Schifano: Satellite (1968, col. and w/b, 35 mm, 82′); Umano non umano (1969, Eastman color, 16 mm and 35 mm, 95′); Trapianto, consunzione e morte di Franco Brocani (1969, Eastamn color and w/b, 16 mm and 35 mm, 120′).
The meeting and the video-installation aim to mark out a project of exhibition that wants to suggest different interpretations, an occasion to reflect about the meaning of “author movie “through the work of Mario Schifano. All this is supported by some witness that provide us both critical reflections and direct relationships had with the same artist.
During the sixties Mario Schifano decides to sobstitute the paint brush with the movie camera. This artistic means of expression will let him to caught up the highest form of satisfaction.
The images reproducted by technologic instrument, deprived of any false appearance and pointed out in their essentiality, are prefered by the artist for the speed of perception. The movie camera used since 1964 gave the possibility to Shifano to catch everything just in one moment, going on to advance, as in painting, always by fragments, and above all gave him the possibility to realize those artistic research on the dynamism that interested him for severals years.
Even for this reason he decided to make movies. The approach with the cinema has been passional, characterized by a kind of obsession for the framing, that very often is shaky, and for the realization of long sequences rich of images often repeated and juxtaposed. After his first works, Schifano realizes in 1967 the short Anna Carini in agosto vista dalle farfalle.
The following year he starts the shooting of Satellite that together with Umano non umano and Trapianto, consunzione e morte di Franco Brocani, will give life to the trilogy. Schifano’s movies are not narrative, they show images but don’t tell a story, they are free from the cinematographic canons, and for this reason they rank among the so called “cinema of artist”.
In occasion of the video-installation and of the meeting will be presented, for the “praxis”cycle, the book Trilogia d’artista. Il cinema di Mario Schifano written by Giorgia Calò, published by Lithos editor for the artisticaMENTE collection- essays, documents, interviews- directed by Simonetta Lux.
Like symbol of Mario Schifano’s movie production, interpretated as the vision of the relationship between the two means of expression, the cinema and the art, will be showed the Proiettore cinematografico (a real cinematographic projector) of the end of sixties, painted by the artist with enamel and acrylic.
In memory of Mario Schifano’s happening I sogni e le stelle given in Rome at the Piper in 1967, the tracks of the band Le stelle di Mario Schifano will be the accompaniment for the public during the exhibition.
The meeting, the video-installation and the book have been realized with the contribution of Schifano foundation and the region of Lazio for the research in “New multimedial technology application for contemporary art”. It is realized according the MLAC program of experimental courses of Stage/Master in Critical Curating and Museum Installation. Given by the director of the museum Simonetta Lux and realized by the MLAC’s curator Domenico Scudero.
