Czech Point nasce con l’intento di presentare il lavoro di due artisti accomunati da età e provenienza ma anche da una ricerca che si muove tra la storia della Repubblica Ceca e il presente globalizzato, affrontando temi relativi al rapporto del singolo con la città e con il proprio passato. Alla mostra di Jan Pfeiffer seguirà, con inaugurazione il 18 maggio, quella di Lukáš Machalický dal titolo To my left, to my right.
In occasione della mostra al MLAC, Jan Pfeiffer presenta alcuni lavori realizzati dal 2008 al 2010. Nel video The Observer, un uomo di spalle osserva silenziosamente un mondo asettico e futuristico, dove non c’è traccia della presenza umana. Attraverso questa figura enigmatica Pfeiffer invita lo spettatore ad “affacciarsi” sul futuro, provocando il senso di spaesamento tipico dell’entrare in relazione con qualcosa che non si conosce. Altri lavori come After the first (2008) e From (2008) insistono sulla possibilità di rintracciare elementi simili in contesti differenti: After the first si compone di tre fotografie, ad un primo impatto quasi identiche eppure scattate in tre città diverse (New York, Berlino, Praga), dove Pfeiffer ha ritratto la stessa scena. From è invece un’installazione nella quale tre oggetti (un piatto, una sedia e un tavolo) sono realizzati ognuno con l’assemblaggio di due pezzi differenti, perfettamente combacianti seppur realizzati in diversi Paesi, a rimarcare la sparizione delle tradizioni locali a favore del mercato globalizzato. Nella serie di video In order (2008), presentati in piccole cornici digitali, Pfeiffer completa l’immagine di fondo sovrapponendo il pezzo mancante. Giocando a mettere “in ordine” alcune situazioni, l’artista pone l’accento su una possibilità di miglioramento solo simulata, che contrasta l’apparenza ludica dell’operazione. Nei lavori più recenti, Outreach, Above e il video Beyond Control l’attenzione si sposta sulla città, indagata nella sua veste reale e simbolica e luogo dei contrasti tra pianificazione razionale e percezione soggettiva.

Già vincitore di premi e concorsi (Premio della giuria al Other Visions 2009, PAF – 8th festival of Film Animation, 2009; Primo premio al Essl Award CEE 2009) ha partecipato a numerose mostre collettive. La mostra, patrocinata dall’Istituto Culturale Ceco, si svolge nell’ambito del ciclo espositivo del MLAC su progetto scientifico del direttore Simonetta Lux e per la realizzazione del curatore del MLAC Domenico Scudero.

On Wednesday May 4th, at 6.30 p.m., MLAC – Museo Laboratorio di Arte Contemporanea, Sapienza University of Rome, will present Jan Pfeiffer’s solo show, titled Right in front of me, the first part of Czech Point, curated by Alessandra Troncone.
Czech Point wishes to present the work of two artists who share not only their age and birthplace, but also their research about Czech Republic’s history and the globalized present, facing the issue of the relationship between the city, the individual and his own past. Jan Pfeiffer’s solo show will be followed, on Wednesday May 18th, by Lukáš Machalický’s solo exhibition titled To my left, to my right. In the occasion of the exhibition at the MLAC, Jan Pfeiffer will present some works created between 2008 and 2010. The Observer video represents a man shown from behind who silently looks out from the window into a futuristic, aseptic world, where there is no trace of human presence. Through this enigmatic figure, Pfeiffer invites the spectator to look towards the future, unleashing that typical confusion that may be felt while standing in front of something that cannot be fully comprehended. Other works like After the first (2008) andFrom (2008) emphasize the possibility to find alike elements in different contexts: After the first is composed of three photographs which may look almost identical at first glance but, surprisingly, they were taken in three different cities (New York, Berlin, Prague), where Pfeiffer described the same scene. From, instead, is an installation in which three objects (a plate, a chair and a table) were assembled putting together two halves, each being made in a different Country. They appear to be the same, but the context of their origin is completely different. The global market suppresses the local styles and traditions, creating unnatural, multicultural connections. With In order videos (2008), presented in mini digital frames, Pfeiffer completes the background image overlapping the missing piece. The artist emphasizes the pretended improvement, in contrast with the apparent, playful language of the action. The most recent works, Outreach, Above and the video Beyond Control, turn the attention to the city, which is examined in both its sides, real and symbolic, as a place where the contrast between rational urban planning and subjective perception will be visible.
Jan Pfeiffer was born in Prague in 1984. His solo shows include: Urbanism of Memory, Open Gallery, Bratislava, 2010; Limited Overlap, Galerie mladých BKC, Brno, 2010; Trough and Trough, Vernon Project Gallery, Prague, 2008. He won some important awards (Other Visions 2009, PAF – 8th festival of Film Animation – Jury Award; First prize at the Essl Award CEE 2009) and he participated to several group exhibitions. The exhibition, under the patronage of the Czech Cultural Institute, is part of MLAC’s expositive cycle, directed by Simonetta Lux and curated by Domenico Scudero.
