Katia Bassanini si insinua nel percorso indicato da Piero Manzoni, Chris Burden e Marina Abramovic nel tentativo di rinnovare il linguaggio delle performances rituali o spettacolari; la sua una sperimentazione volta ad indagare la presentazione diversificata del “resto” quale deposito significante che la performance lascia indirettamente dietro sé.
I piccoli disastri che la nostra epoca esibisce in piena luce e commenta largamente forniscono materia prima al suo percorso; un “naufragio” che metaforicamente commenta l’esistenza umana nei suoi pericoli e limiti e che acquisisce senso alla presenza dello spettatore – distratta, contemplativa, distante o implicata che sia – di fronte allo spettacolo di un fallimento. I lavori inscenano ruoli degradati, posture ridicole, “venerd“ lavorativi dall’abbigliamento casuale”, senza riscatto, compassione o ironia. L’angolo scelto l’angolo morto, l’angolo preferito dal personaggio (teatrale o meno) della commedia brechtiana. Come ricorda l’artista stessa: “la teatralitˆ un’arte dalle semplici gesta, della battuta tipica; la performance potrebbe esser un’esperienza comica – non vi commedia che del potere – della semplificazione”.
In mostra verranno esposte le video-installazioni Wrecks (11′ 40”) e Jack Pot (2′ 54”) e la collezione di giacche Casual Friday.
In occasione della mostra sarˆ presentato un libro monografico dedicato al lavoro dell’artista. La mostra ed il libro sono realizzati con il contributo di: Stanley Thomas Johnson Stiftung, Bern; PRO HELVETIA Fondazione Svizzera per la Cultura; Fondation NestlŽ pour l’Art, Lausanne; Repubblica e Cantone del Ticino
La mostra realizzata nella programmazione del Museo Laboratorio con il contributo della Regione Lazio per le ricerche “Applicazione nuove tecnologie multimediali all’arte contemporanea”, nell’ambito del Dottorato di Ricerca “Arte di Confine”, e dei relativi corsi sperimentali di Stage/Master in Cura Critica ed Installazione Museale, voluti dal direttore del Museo Simonetta Lux e realizzati del curatore del MLAC Domenico Scudero.
La mostra resterà aperta dal 4 al 30 dicembre 2003.

On December 4, 2003 at 6 o’clock p.m., the Laboratory Museum of Contemporary Art (MLAC) at “La Sapienza” University, is glad to inaugurate Katia Bassanini’s “Casual Friday” exhibition, curated by Mario Casanova and Domenico Scudero.
Katia Bassanini follows the work created by Piero Manzoni, Chris Burden and Marina Abramovic. The artist tries to renew the language of the ritual or spectacular performances; her experimentation enquires about the presentation of the different “rest” as the last significant meaning that the performance leaves behind itself.
The true subject of the artist’s work are the little disasters freely commented on and showed by our times. A “shipwreck,” which metaphorically represents the dangers and the limits of human existence and that finds its sense in the relationship existing between the spectator and the show of a failure. The spectator’s reaction can be contemplative, absent or involved, but in any case it is a reaction towards a show of a failure.
The works put on stage show degrading roles, ridiculous posture, “working fridays in casual clothes”, without any sense of redemption, compassion or irony. The angle chosen by the artist is a dead one, the favourite angle of the Brechtian comedy’s character. The same artist reminds us: “The theatre is the art of simple action, the typical cue, the performance could be a comical experience there is no comedy but that of the power, of simplification”.
The video-installations Wrecks (11’40”) and Jack Pot (2’54″) and Casual Firiday’s jacket collection will be showen during the exhibition.
During the exhibition a monografic book will be presented dedicated to the artist’s work. The exhibition and the book were made possible by Stanley Thomas Johanson Stiftung, Bern; PRO HELVETIA, foundation for Swiss Culture; Foundation Nestl pour l’Art, Lausanne; The Ticino’s Republic and Canton.
The exhibition is realized in the MLAC program, with contribution from the Region of Lazio for the research of “New multimedia technology of Contemporary Art” in the field of Doctorial reasearch “Arte di Confine”, and of relative experimental corses of Stage/Master in Critc Cure and Museum Instalation. Given by the director of the Museum Simonetta Lux and realized by the MLAC’s curator, Domenico Scudero.
